Get serious about web transparency

Recently, on a trip to All Things Digital I stumbled across a completely refreshing notice called “A note about tracking cookies” outlining what tracking cookies are, how the website was using them, describing their relationship with their advertising partnerships, and educating the user on how to opt-out of these types of advertising methods.

Surely, this is not a post that most websites would “recommend” that you actually read through and take action on, as it limits their ability to “serve you with a better experience” but in a web world with growing concerns over privacy, All Things Digital and The Wall Street Journal have done something down right noble. A “cookie” is a small text file that contains a string of alphanumeric characters that helps advertisers see your behavior and then serve different content based on that behavior. After a little time of searching across the web, I figured I’d compile a list of ways you can prevent these annoying cookies from being written to your computer, taking up tiny bits of space, and keeping tiny bits of personal information (and I believe web browsing preferences are personal.)

DoubleClick by Google — Opt Out

Omniture by Adobe — Opt Out

Google Advertising Cookie Opt-out Plugin (for IE and Firefox)

Google Advertising Cookie Opt-out (for Chrome)

Google Advertising Cookie Opt-out (for Safari)

Google Ads Preferences

The Network Advertising Initiave (Over 50 Different Networks)

We’re all in this together, so I encourage you to share this article and hunt for any additional resources, so we can update this and keep it current. Leave a comment or email me and I’d be glad to append this list and include some new networks as they emerge.
